…And during this week not even a single Streptococcus bacterium
grew, a single calculus theorem derived, or a single email checked; for more time was
spent in waiting rooms and sterile offices than on campus and in lab. And for
the first time, confusion and helplessness was prevalent in what seemed like all
realms of life; especially when watching someone go through so much pain while simultaneously
being sidelined, paralyzed with empathy. And while the piles of homework and
to-do lists still grow, little was accomplished to advance this scholar academically;
however, through the guidance of mentors and colleagues, one thing was
achieved, one thing that outweighs any other short-coming: perspective…
