Week #5, October 3, 2013: Green Thumb Turned Grim Reaper

I have always been so proud of my ability to grow plants. This week has proven otherwise. I accidentally killed my Black-Eyed Pea plant. I honestly don't think me stabbing it with a bamboo shoot so that it would have something to grow around had anything to do with it. Unfortunately, the only things growing in my garden are WEEDS! Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration as I do have Mung Beans and Lima Beans, but I really expected so much more. Nonetheless, I do have a working hypothesis which is helping me cope through this travesty: most of the seeds Matt gave me expired in the 1990's; so, green thumb maybe, but magical thumb has yet to be seen.

Moving forward...Today, I replanted seven of the original seeds hoping that I will have more luck. Another item to point out is that the seeds that did not germinate are all desert trees. After speaking with Matt and Elena Ortiz, I discovered that their germination period could be up to four weeks. Nevertheless, it has approximately been that long, so I decided to start from scratch. Right before I re-potted my new hopefuls, I did tell Matt that there were some plants growing in my almost barren pots; sadly, he informed me they were CARROTS! Considering, I never planted carrots, I guess I might have a magical thumb after all.

I replanted the following: Black-Eyed Peas, Olneya Tesota, Cercidium Floridum, Cercidium Microphyllum, and the Moringa Tree. I will be sure to take extra care of these little guys. Maybe I just need to talk to them more. So, for now, it's just a waiting game. As soon as I have some viable plants, I will commence the next step of my project. Now, I don't want to leave you on such a sad note, so take a look at what I have managed to grow. They are turning out quite nicely.
